Johannesburg – Four corrupt Johannesburg metro police officers will be dismissed on Thursday after they were found guilty of bribery.
Metro spokesperson Inspector Edna Mamonyane said the four would be served with dismissal letters following a disciplinary hearing which was finalised on August 7.
“The officers took bribes from hawkers at the Dube Metro Police Pound in Soweto in 2008.”
Mamonyane said the corruption was exposed by a daily newspaper which later accused her media liaison colleague, Wayne Minnaar, of lying.
The paper claimed the officers were not dismissed as Minnaar had promised.
“There were procedures to be followed, both the complainant and the accused had to be given a chance to present their side of the story…the officers were suspended for 90 days but after that period had to return to work because the hearing had not been finalised.”
She said the city’s policy stated that employees could only be suspended for 90 days.
“If the case drags on for longer than the period… the employee cannot be paid while doing nothing at home. He/she must return to work and be placed in a different department.”
