Local Naples plumber David Gaines, of David Gaines Plumbing Inc seems to be bucking the trend and expanding his business during these troubled times.

Naples plumbing contractor David Gaines is expanding his operations in Naples even though the rest of us are still mired in recession. Normally this kind of news is restricted to downturn related industries like pawn shops, quick check companies and payday loan operators. This time however it’s a down to earth, honest working man who is making it good during the bad times.

So what does he know that hundreds of other business don’t?

Part of the answer is in the field he is in, and the other is the way he does business. Plumbing isn’t a luxury, it is a necessity. None of us even want to contemplate trying to live without a toilet for any length of time. Pipes still burst, water still leaks, and taps still drip. The basics of what it is to be a plumber hasn’t changed. The repair side of business is still strong. Although the callouts have reduced somewhat in the last couple of years, David puts this down to people trying to do the repairs themselves or making do and saving the money. The bigger jobs are still coming in though. Pipe repairs or water heating system repairs are beyond the skillset of most people.

The other side of that coin is that people are tending to stay put instead of moving home, and improving what they have. This adds some volume to the renovations market and good quality tradesmen are still at a premium. The kitchen and bathroom are the two highest trafficked rooms in any home. Both rooms where David’s skills are most needed if something goes wrong, or when a homeowner wants to make improvements.

David also attributes some success to the way he does business. Straightforward and forthright is how it comes across. His clients get what they pay for, no inflating fees, playing the clock or adding markup to parts. David takes pride in his work, you could even describe him as old fashioned. A quality tradesman, doing a good days work and getting paid a fair wage for it.

His clients seem to appreciate his way of doing business too, as David puts some of his success down to repeat custom. Most of us tend to stick with a good contractor when we find one. A little bit of the “better the devil you know”, with a healthy dose of value for money.

There are many in businesses large or small who should take a leaf out of David’s book. The old fashioned, honorable way of doing things. Turning up on time, doing what you say you will do, when you say you will do it. All values seemingly from days gone by, but found alive and kicking in Naples.
