The construction industry isn’t the first field you think of when you think about honesty and integrity. You could be forgiven for that, as it isn’t something we would associate with it either.
However, as trading becomes more difficult, and our spending slows to a trickle, businesses are having to rethink their marketing strategies to entice us to work with them. Naples firm Sweet Sheldon Homes is a company that doesn’t have to change anything, as honesty and integrity have been their bywords since they started in 2003.
The founder John Sweet has capitalized on his hospitality background to bring a bit of straightforward dealing to the Naples construction arena. The company takes a longer view of working with clients and does everything they can to ensure expectations are managed and met, and that the end result is a job well done and a happy client.
Word of mouth is a powerful tool, especially in the trades. Sweet Sheldon Homes is one of those companies that come along and shakes things up a bit, forcing competitors to keep up or fall behind. In a competitive marketplace, honesty and integrity is prized above all other things when choosing a tradesman.
Being dealt with fairly and not be treated like an idiot is something we all demand, but rarely receive. We don’t always mind hearing bad news as long as it’s delivered with honesty and a little understanding. By being upfront with his clients, John Sweet has turned this into an art form.
“I believe in giving people what they want but being up front with them as to what it takes.” So says his bio on his website. This approach might be viewed with horror by other construction firms who have firmly believed in painting a pretty picture while slowly adding the darker colors as the project progresses.
Traditionally a client is painted a rosy picture of an ideal project where nothing will go wrong and the job will come in on time and on budget. Then gradually the contractor will drip feed problems into the mix which inevitably adds cost and delay to the project. They think this way, the client is more likely to accept their quote, and once the work begins, isn’t going to argue too much about the added ‘extras’,
John Sweets is obviously a man who doesn’t like surprises. He is upfront about the costs, scope and challenges of any project. He outlines the needs and possible pitfalls of a job before the first finger has been lifted. By managing the expectations of his clients, he gains their trust, and then their good feelings.
“Our honesty and integrity is what makes the difference. We become partners during the building process.” This is another quote from Johns bio page.
By viewing clients as partners, they feel more valued and respected. A good job, combined with a genuine respect between client and contractor is why Sweet Sheldon Homes are bucking the trend in construction.
