There are several ways to obtain a logo for your web site. Here is a list of the methods and their pros and cons.

Make your own – This is probably the least expensive of the ways to put up a logo. If you have a little graphic design experience, this is easy. Even if you don’t have the experience, you can still create an effective logo. Use the paint program in Windows to do this.

PROS: It is simple, easy and cheap.
CONS: Can be very rudimentary and sometimes looks a little simple, thereby lessening the effect you wanted. This is not always the case, so practice is a necessity. See what you can come up with. You might just surprise yourself.

Hire a graphic designer – This can cost some money, but the results can be worth the expense. A professional looking logo design lends a serious stigma to your web pages. Most, if not all, graphic designers can have you a design ready to go in a couple of day’s time.

PROS: Professional appearance, neat lines and lends gravity to your site.
CONS: Can be expensive and sometimes time consuming.

Look for a free logo design supplier – Yes, they do exist and you actually can get a decent looking logo for no charge up front. Just search for "free logos" on your favorite search engine to see what’s out there.

PROS: Free of charge
CONS: You only get one freebie, then you start paying. Watch the TOS too. Be sure you don’t
agree to something you can’t afford.

It is easy and simple to place the logo on your pages. All you do is save the graphic to your web site files and write the HTML telling the page where to find the image. When you save the image to your web files, it automatically has its own URL. Use that URL to place it on your web pages.

For now, find or make your logo and save it to your web file manager. Give the file a name you can easily remember so you can find it later. Writing the HTML to put it where you want it is another lesson for another day.

For the most part, we are designers, code monkeys and artists. We deal with people because we have to, not because we particularly enjoy it. Yet when we go freelance, or work in a busy web design studio, we are often asked to consider customer service. We need the client on side so they pay up and call again.

For those of you like me, who prefer computers to people, here are some useful tips on offering great customer service as an artist.

Be Quick or Be Dead

Time is money and all that. If a client is wanting a quote, a change, or a chat, it pays to not keep them waiting. You’re going to have to respond at some point, so why not do it right away? You’re going to get a much more favorable response if you get right back to them.

Even if you can’t fulfill the request right away, telling them that is still a good move. Keeping them on side and happy makes the much easier to deal with, and presents a much more professional attitude, which they will appreciate.

Impress Them

Keep them updated, listen to them,go the extra mile, and put yourself in their shoes. As a web designer, it’s your job to being their dream to life. This could be their lifetime ambition you’re working on, and they could be nervously trusting you to fulfill a prophecy. It’s easy to dismiss a client as a necessary evil, but they deserve our respect.

Keeping them updated stops them badgering you. It shows professionalism, and gives the client a feeling that they are in safe hands. It’s also a useful thing to get into the habit of doing for when there is slippage in a project. A regular, frank update will prevent irate clients.

You’ll find most people won’t mind your missing a deadline too much if there is a good reason, and you have let them know in advance.

Listening to them is an extension of remembering you’re designing something for them, not for yourself. While it’s your job to guide them as to what is practical, popular and possible, at the end of the day, they are paying you to do a job.

Going the extra mile is a great way to get repeat business. It doesn’t have to cost anything in time or effort, but can make an awful lot of difference to how a client perceives you or the agency. If the client asks something that can be accomplished easily, let them have it.

Putting yourself in their shoes is all about empathy. It doesn’t have to be touchy feely, it simply means thinking about things from their perspective. As a website design client, would you be happy with how you are treating them? If the answer is yes, then keep it up. If it comes back as a no, then it’s time to up your game.

The various benefits of CMS has been talked about a lot because there are so many of them. For users and contributors it’s easy to add content, update it and run the site. For webmasters, it’s pretty stable and offers decent security. For web designers, it offers a structured framework within which to work our magic.

Content Management Systems, come in all shapes and sizes, from the massive, like Interwoven, to the more modest, like Zope. Whatever the size, or scope of the system, the theory is the same. To use something that allows us to create the design templates, while allowing contributors to provide content in a separate environment.

That separation is what makes CMS great for web design. We can play with the visuals, create themes and effects, while leaving the structure to the developers. We can work independently without getting in each other’s way, knowing that the end result will work as advertised.

All of us at Sarasota Web Design are specialists in our chosen field. We have other skills that contribute to the whole, but we work here for out specific skillset. Working with a CMS allows us to play to our strengths. It takes the best from us without burdening us with the irrelevant. A web designer can concentrate on the visuals, the developer makes sure the back end works, and the contributors stay out of the way.

Working with a CMS allows us to streamline our workflow and makes life easier for all involved. We can work in the web design while the media teams work on the content. This separation is valuable as coordinating the different elements of a web design does take some organizing sometimes.

Another benefit of working with a CMS is that it lets a web designer be a designer. We don’t have to worry about the platform, the code, plugins, or any of that. If we’re using a platform like WordPress or Joomla, that’s already taken care of. If we have developed our own CMS, the programmers look after it.

It also shortens the approval process no end. When we have a redesign project going, it takes hours, not days to showcase the changes and get them approved. We copy the database, host it ourselves, and play until it’s finished. Simple as that.

There’s more. Using a standard CMS ensures backwards compatibility. Much of website design and development is taken with testing, then testing again. We have to test at different screen resolutions, browsers, operating systems and system setups to make sure our sites work all the time.

The advantage with one of these systems is that the code takes care of all that for you. Apart from adding a bit of code for older versions of Internet Explorer, the rest is managed by the platform. While we still have to test to make sure it works every time, we don’t have to modify the code to cover every eventuality.

Using CMS in web design has its own challenges, but it gives us the freedom to do what we love doing best.

Like the monstrous bogeyman used to scare children ‘til they pee their pants, comic sans is used to scare web designers. Comic sans is not scary because it’s ugly, it’s scary because like a stalker, it follows you everywhere.

A casual script typeface modeled on fonts used in American comic books, comic sans font has been dubbed as “the worst font of all time.” In just the same way that on overly cheerful person annoys everyone, this gratingly friendly typeface has inspired the “Ban Comic Sans” movement.

This bogeyman of web designers was created in October of 1994 by Vincent Connare of Microsoft. He based it on a Batman comic book font, The Dark Knight Return (lettered by John Costanza), and Watchmen (lettered by Dave Gibbsons).
Later on it became the standard font of the OEM version of Windows 95, then it became one of the default fonts for Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The font was also used in Microsoft Comic  when it was released in 1996 along with Internet Explorer 3.0. July 2010 came in with new versions titled Comic Sans 2010 which included two new fonts: Italic and Bold Italic.

Since then, comic sans has been used indiscriminately, showing up everywhere from “porn sites, gravestones, and hospital posters about bowel cancer.” (The Wall Street Journal) In short, it is too widely used. Just like “Poker Face” or the acronyms “OMG,” comic sans is getting into everyones nerves. It has inspired many to create a Facebook hate page because it’s “irritably simple” and childlike. What was intended to be a “perfect solution to a small corporate problem” became something that “inspired so much revulsion.” (Simon Garfield, BBC News)

Why is everyone hating on Comic Sans?

The Ban Comic San website points out that using comic sans to share a serious thought “is analogous to showing up for a black tie event in a clown costume.”

Comics sans is not alone in catching the ire of web designers everywhere. Here are the other considered “worst” type fonts for a web design company.

The Other Monsters of Web Design Topography

1. Curlz MT

This is a font that is good in small doses. It’s illegible when used for e-mail or IM. If you ever used this font, you are sacrificing content for the image you want to portray which is: “I’m a pretty and whimsical little girl.” Ironically, this typeface was designed by two men, Carl Crossgove and Steve Matteson back in 1995.

2. Vivaldi

Yes, it looks like real handwriting. We get it. You want to put a personal touch on your documents, but please if your document is 20 pages long will you please use something that won’t get your reader cross-eyed? If you can’t read it, I also can’t. That’s Vivaldi typeface font if you’re wondering.

3. Kristen ITC

It’s not as fun as Comic Sans or Curlz but it really excited elementary school teachers, childcare professionals, and others jobs that have to do with children. You are a child on the inside. It was inspired by a handwritten menu at a restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts , and looks like a child’s handwriting. Now let me just stick this document in the sandbox and let kids play with it.

4. Bradley Hand ITC

A type font with a curvy, hand-written look, Bradley Hand ITC has been abused by the likes of adolescent females who love using hearts to dot their “I.” It is based on the handwriting of British designer Richard Bradley. Now isn’t that nice to know that anyone can forge Richard Bradley’s handwriting? Shall I sign for a blank check on his behalf?

Whatever typeface you choose to write your documents, make sure that they are legible, meaning easy to read. Don’t make people doubt your professionalism just because of a typefont. Remember to represent yourself well.
