CONS: Can be expensive and sometimes time consuming.

Look for a free logo design supplier – Yes, they do exist and you actually can get a decent looking logo for no charge up front. Just search for "free logos" on your favorite search engine to see what’s out there.

PROS: Free of charge
CONS: You only get one freebie, then you start paying. Watch the TOS too. Be sure you don’t
agree to something you can’t afford.

It is easy and simple to place the logo on your pages. All you do is save the graphic to your web site files and write the HTML telling the page where to find the image. When you save the image to your web files, it automatically has its own URL. Use that URL to place it on your web pages.

For now, find or make your logo and save it to your web file manager. Give the file a name you can easily remember so you can find it later. Writing the HTML to put it where you want it is another lesson for another day.

For the most part, we are designers, code monkeys and artists. We deal with people because we have to, not because we particularly enjoy it. Yet when we go freelance, or work in a busy web design studio, we are often asked to consider customer service. We need the client on side so they pay up and call again.

For those of you like me, who prefer computers to people, here are some useful tips on offering great customer service as an artist.

Be Quick or Be Dead

Time is money and all that. If a client is wanting a quote, a change, or a chat, it pays to not keep them waiting. You’re going to have to respond at some point, so why not do it right away? You’re going to get a much more favorable response if you get right back to them.

Even if you can’t fulfill the request right away, telling them that is still a good move. Keeping them on side and happy makes the much easier to deal with, and presents a much more professional attitude, which they will appreciate.

Impress Them

Keep them updated, listen to them,go the extra mile, and put yourself in their shoes. As a web designer, it’s your job to being their dream to life. This could be their lifetime ambition you’re working on, and they could be nervously trusting you to fulfill a prophecy. It’s easy to dismiss a client as a necessary evil, but they deserve our respect.

Keeping them updated stops them badgering you. It shows professionalism, and gives the client a feeling that they are in safe hands. It’s also a useful thing to get into the habit of doing for when there is slippage in a project. A regular, frank update will prevent irate clients.

You’ll find most people won’t mind your missing a deadline too much if there is a good reason, and you have let them know in advance.

Listening to them is an extension of remembering you’re designing something for them, not for yourself. While it’s your job to guide them as to what is practical, popular and possible, at the end of the day, they are paying you to do a job.

Going the extra mile is a great way to get repeat business. It doesn’t have to cost anything in time or effort, but can make an awful lot of difference to how a client perceives you or the agency. If the client asks something that can be accomplished easily, let them have it.

Putting yourself in their shoes is all about empathy. It doesn’t have to be touchy feely, it simply means thinking about things from their perspective. As a website design client, would you be happy with how you are treating them? If the answer is yes, then keep it up. If it comes back as a no, then it’s time to up your game.

The various benefits of CMS has been talked about a lot because there are so many of them. For users and contributors it’s easy to add content, update it and run the site. For webmasters, it’s pretty stable and offers decent security. For web designers, it offers a structured framework within which to work our magic.

Content Management Systems, come in all shapes and sizes, from the massive, like Interwoven, to the more modest, like Zope. Whatever the size, or scope of the system, the theory is the same. To use something that allows us to create the design templates, while allowing contributors to provide content in a separate environment.

That separation is what makes CMS great for web design. We can play with the visuals, create themes and effects, while leaving the structure to the developers. We can work independently without getting in each other’s way, knowing that the end result will work as advertised.

All of us at Sarasota Web Design are specialists in our chosen field. We have other skills that contribute to the whole, but we work here for out specific skillset. Working with a CMS allows us to play to our strengths. It takes the best from us without burdening us with the irrelevant. A web designer can concentrate on the visuals, the developer makes sure the back end works, and the contributors stay out of the way.

Working with a CMS allows us to streamline our workflow and makes life easier for all involved. We can work in the web design while the media teams work on the content. This separation is valuable as coordinating the different elements of a web design does take some organizing sometimes.

Another benefit of working with a CMS is that it lets a web designer be a designer. We don’t have to worry about the platform, the code, plugins, or any of that. If we’re using a platform like WordPress or Joomla, that’s already taken care of. If we have developed our own CMS, the programmers look after it.

It also shortens the approval process no end. When we have a redesign project going, it takes hours, not days to showcase the changes and get them approved. We copy the database, host it ourselves, and play until it’s finished. Simple as that.

There’s more. Using a standard CMS ensures backwards compatibility. Much of website design and development is taken with testing, then testing again. We have to test at different screen resolutions, browsers, operating systems and system setups to make sure our sites work all the time.

The advantage with one of these systems is that the code takes care of all that for you. Apart from adding a bit of code for older versions of Internet Explorer, the rest is managed by the platform. While we still have to test to make sure it works every time, we don’t have to modify the code to cover every eventuality.

Using CMS in web design has its own challenges, but it gives us the freedom to do what we love doing best.
