What types of WordPress themes are available today? The market has exploded in the past few years with more designers leaping out there with their personal designs for sale and thousands of people searching for the best designs. There are so many designs available that it could take days if not weeks to go through them all if you wanted to make a thorough search for your favorite.

To make the market easier to maneuver, you should break it down into basic categories. When you browse only through the designs put together for the type of website you want to operate, you cut out thousands of designs that may be appealing visually but just aren’t set up for your type of site.

Ecommerce WP Themes

An ecommerce WordPress theme will be specifically designed for websites selling products online. This may be the sale of informational products like eBooks or it could be the sale of physical products you make from home and ship out. It might also include a website selling items from a dropship company. If you are setting up a website with the intention of selling something, then you fall into the world of ecommerce.

There are some WordPress themes developed for a store format where you can sell any type of product you desire. These themes are set up to look like storefronts with categories of products and images on the front page to help visitors find what they are looking for quickly.

Others are designed to sell specific types of products and will have graphics and special layouts for that particular product. Not everyone will find one of these for the products they want to sell, but there are always general storefront designs that can be modified with the right images and colors to work for any product.

Magazine & News WP Themes

These themes are designed to look like online magazines or newspapers. They are used by people who want to give off the vibe of a trustworthy, professional source of information. The sites are typically devoted to one specific topic, but they can also be creative spaces where writers display their personal works along with photography or artistic images.

These themes are often designed much like the newspapers you read in print. They will have large, bold headers with slideshows and lots of links off to deeper pages of the site offering text and video content.

Gallery WP Themes

These websites are designed for artists, photographers, and others who want to display lots of visual content. There will be areas for written text as well, but the goal is to create lots of space for images. A photographer can easily turn one of these WordPress themes into a virtual gallery of their work and an artist could present pictures of their work to the world as well. Sales of these artistic endeavors can even be made from a gallery type theme.

Personal WP Themes

This is where many WordPress themes fall into the market. You will find a rich diversity of designs and color schemes in this category. Everyone should be able to find something in this category of the market, so it is where you should spend your time if you don’t fit into any of the other standard categories.

Having a web site is an absolute must these days. Whether you are a sole proprietor or a large company, your web design is the front line of your business. Your web page or site is the first thing that your prospects see and they draw their initial conclusions based on that first impression. Therefore, it is imperative that you incorporate a company logo into your web design plans.

Logos are the one of the most influential aspects of your web presence. It shows that you are serious and are in for the long haul. Most smaller web sites that do NOT use a logo, at least on the home page, don’t get much of a click through rate. So a logo, as you can see, is vital to your success.

There are several ways to obtain a logo for your web site. Here is a list of the methods and their pros and cons.

Make your own – This is probably the least expensive of the ways to put up a logo. If you have a little graphic design experience, this is easy. Even if you don’t have the experience, you can still create an effective logo. Use the paint program in Windows to do this.

PROS: It is simple, easy and cheap.
CONS: Can be very rudimentary and sometimes looks a little simple, thereby lessening the effect you wanted. This is not always the case, so practice is a necessity. See what you can come up with. You might just surprise yourself.

Hire a graphic designer – This can cost some money, but the results can be worth the expense. A professional looking logo design lends a serious stigma to your web pages. Most, if not all, graphic designers can have you a design ready to go in a couple of day’s time.

PROS: Professional appearance, neat lines and lends gravity to your site.
CONS: Can be expensive and sometimes time consuming.

Look for a free logo design supplier – Yes, they do exist and you actually can get a decent looking logo for no charge up front. Just search for "free logos" on your favorite search engine to see what’s out there.

PROS: Free of charge
CONS: You only get one freebie, then you start paying. Watch the TOS too. Be sure you don’t
agree to something you can’t afford.

It is easy and simple to place the logo on your pages. All you do is save the graphic to your web site files and write the HTML telling the page where to find the image. When you save the image to your web files, it automatically has its own URL. Use that URL to place it on your web pages.

For now, find or make your logo and save it to your web file manager. Give the file a name you can easily remember so you can find it later. Writing the HTML to put it where you want it is another lesson for another day.

The various benefits of CMS has been talked about a lot because there are so many of them. For users and contributors it’s easy to add content, update it and run the site. For webmasters, it’s pretty stable and offers decent security. For web designers, it offers a structured framework within which to work our magic.

Content Management Systems, come in all shapes and sizes, from the massive, like Interwoven, to the more modest, like Zope. Whatever the size, or scope of the system, the theory is the same. To use something that allows us to create the design templates, while allowing contributors to provide content in a separate environment.

That separation is what makes CMS great for web design. We can play with the visuals, create themes and effects, while leaving the structure to the developers. We can work independently without getting in each other’s way, knowing that the end result will work as advertised.

All of us at Sarasota Web Design are specialists in our chosen field. We have other skills that contribute to the whole, but we work here for out specific skillset. Working with a CMS allows us to play to our strengths. It takes the best from us without burdening us with the irrelevant. A web designer can concentrate on the visuals, the developer makes sure the back end works, and the contributors stay out of the way.

Working with a CMS allows us to streamline our workflow and makes life easier for all involved. We can work in the web design while the media teams work on the content. This separation is valuable as coordinating the different elements of a web design does take some organizing sometimes.

Another benefit of working with a CMS is that it lets a web designer be a designer. We don’t have to worry about the platform, the code, plugins, or any of that. If we’re using a platform like WordPress or Joomla, that’s already taken care of. If we have developed our own CMS, the programmers look after it.

It also shortens the approval process no end. When we have a redesign project going, it takes hours, not days to showcase the changes and get them approved. We copy the database, host it ourselves, and play until it’s finished. Simple as that.

There’s more. Using a standard CMS ensures backwards compatibility. Much of website design and development is taken with testing, then testing again. We have to test at different screen resolutions, browsers, operating systems and system setups to make sure our sites work all the time.

The advantage with one of these systems is that the code takes care of all that for you. Apart from adding a bit of code for older versions of Internet Explorer, the rest is managed by the platform. While we still have to test to make sure it works every time, we don’t have to modify the code to cover every eventuality.

Using CMS in web design has its own challenges, but it gives us the freedom to do what we love doing best.

Like the monstrous bogeyman used to scare children ‘til they pee their pants, comic sans is used to scare web designers. Comic sans is not scary because it’s ugly, it’s scary because like a stalker, it follows you everywhere.

A casual script typeface modeled on fonts used in American comic books, comic sans font has been dubbed as “the worst font of all time.” In just the same way that on overly cheerful person annoys everyone, this gratingly friendly typeface has inspired the “Ban Comic Sans” movement.

This bogeyman of web designers was created in October of 1994 by Vincent Connare of Microsoft. He based it on a Batman comic book font, The Dark Knight Return (lettered by John Costanza), and Watchmen (lettered by Dave Gibbsons).
Later on it became the standard font of the OEM version of Windows 95, then it became one of the default fonts for Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The font was also used in Microsoft Comic when it was released in 1996 along with Internet Explorer 3.0. July 2010 came in with new versions titled Comic Sans 2010 which included two new fonts: Italic and Bold Italic.

Since then, comic sans has been used indiscriminately, showing up everywhere from “porn sites, gravestones, and hospital posters about bowel cancer.” (The Wall Street Journal) In short, it is too widely used. Just like “Poker Face” or the acronyms “OMG,” comic sans is getting into everyones nerves. It has inspired many to create a Facebook hate page because it’s “irritably simple” and childlike. What was intended to be a “perfect solution to a small corporate problem” became something that “inspired so much revulsion.” (Simon Garfield, BBC News)

Why is everyone hating on Comic Sans?

The Ban Comic San website points out that using comic sans to share a serious thought “is analogous to showing up for a black tie event in a clown costume.”

Comics sans is not alone in catching the ire of web designers everywhere. Here are the other considered “worst” type fonts for a web design company.

The Other Monsters of Web Design Topography

1. Curlz MT

This is a font that is good in small doses. It’s illegible when used for e-mail or IM. If you ever used this font, you are sacrificing content for the image you want to portray which is: “I’m a pretty and whimsical little girl.” Ironically, this typeface was designed by two men, Carl Crossgove and Steve Matteson back in 1995.

2. Vivaldi

Yes, it looks like real handwriting. We get it. You want to put a personal touch on your documents, but please if your document is 20 pages long will you please use something that won’t get your reader cross-eyed? If you can’t read it, I also can’t. That’s Vivaldi typeface font if you’re wondering.

3. Kristen ITC

It’s not as fun as Comic Sans or Curlz but it really excited elementary school teachers, childcare professionals, and others jobs that have to do with children. You are a child on the inside. It was inspired by a handwritten menu at a restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts , and looks like a child’s handwriting. Now let me just stick this document in the sandbox and let kids play with it.

4. Bradley Hand ITC

A type font with a curvy, hand-written look, Bradley Hand ITC has been abused by the likes of adolescent females who love using hearts to dot their “I.” It is based on the handwriting of British designer Richard Bradley. Now isn’t that nice to know that anyone can forge Richard Bradley’s handwriting? Shall I sign for a blank check on his behalf?

Whatever typeface you choose to write your documents, make sure that they are legible, meaning easy to read. Don’t make people doubt your professionalism just because of a typefont. Remember to represent yourself well.

Hiring a web design company can be expensive, this is why some choose to design their own websites. There are several factors to consider before you decide to hire a professional web designer or whether you decide to do it yourself. It is important to consider the level of expertise that you or the person you plan to hire have in web technology in order to create an attractive, and professional looking website that functions in sync with your goals. It all comes down to skill levels- the ability to add features you want or need, the image you want to project for your website, and the amount of free time you have to devote to building a successful website.

Here are some skill you need to have when building a website:

Knowledge in HTML coding – This may or may not require some training courses on basic HTML. You can also make use of a good web design software to help you with HTML coding.

Creativity – A good eye for color combination and general good taste are important for a web designer to create an aesthetically attractive website.

Expertise in graphic software – Knowledge in graphic software such as Picasa and Photoshop is needed to produce clean and attractive photos and site graphics. It is also needed to optimize the pictures from the smallest possible file size for quick loading.

Expertise in site navigation – Some knowledge in web development such as functionality and usability as well as website navigation design and implementation is an important skill.

Programming Expertise – Basic knowledge in CGI, JavaScript, or database programming is needed so you can add interactive web pages or integrate it with an online database.

Experience in internet marketing and business experience – In building a personal website or a business website, some major business and marketing aspects are need to be taken into consideration right from the beginning of the design stage of the website.

Are You Capable of Building a Website on Your Own?

Ask yourself if you have the time or the skills to build your own website. If you don’t then you can hire a professional to do it for you. You can find a list of professional web designers on the Internet. There are freelance boards that allow you to hire individuals with the expertise you need: web designers, programmers, SEO specialist, copywriters, and more. They can be part of a team or they can work on their own. You also have the option to hire a local web design firm, although free lancers are cheaper to hire because they live in countries where there is a 5:1 ration in salaries. This means that $1 USD is equivalent to $5 USD in their country. So paying a freelancer for $5 an hour is equivalent to paying $25 an hour.

As for web content writing, you can hire a native English speaker for $0.05 per word and up, while non native speakers can be hired for around $0.02 per word.
You have to ensure open communication between you and the web designer and the web developer,as well as the copywriter. A good web designer knows how to include web marketing into site design to make it search engined optimized.

How Much Does Out Sourcing Cost?

You can expect to pay anywhere between $100 up to $1, 500 for a simple five or size page website including the entire site with graphics and content. A more complex interactive site would cost you around $599 for programming,to about $10,000 and up for the entire website.

Your time will also be spent as well. The project will need some managing so expect to write the project specification, spend time writing to freelancers via email, doing some assurance testing, and many more. There maybe cases that developing a website on your own is cheaper than hiring others to do the job.

It’s not about the money you’ll spend, but about keeping your reputation professional. Hiring a professional web designer can help you maintain the image of professionalism.
It’s all about dedication. The decision of whether to outsource or not is based on your dedication to make the most out of the website. If you think you can do a better job than a professional web designer then by all means, D-I-Y is the way to go.

If you’re planning on building your empire, the very first thing you should do is build a brand. That brand should include a business name, a logo, signature, byline and anything else pertinent to your industry. Some brands also need product labels, signatures, specific fonts or color combinations. If you’re planning subsidiary websites, products or services, you need to build this brand into it. Having a coherent brand is the single best way of building a presence in any market. It becomes recognizable, and if you’re lucky, becomes trusted and associated with you, your business and quality. Including this brand into any and all web designs is the first move in a long line of them to build your properly branded company.

Of course, you don’t have to be an entrepreneur or a business to get value from branding. Many individuals have embraced the idea in their personal lives too. With social media being a significant influence in all our lives, it makes sense to “manage” them and control what they say about you as much as possible. By having a complete personal brand and managing what’s said about you, and where, you can retain a semblance of control over your presence on the internet. This approach becomes especially useful when looking for your next career move as many employers have admitted they often research candidates on the internet before deciding to call them for interview.

Advertisements – Email Compliance – Naples Web Design

Including the brand on everything you do will help spread the word about your venture. Include an email signature, have business cards, complement slips, labels, design elements on digital advertising and anything else you put out there. The more exposure it gets, the more recognizable it becomes. Ideally the brand should be designed to sum up your business, and the marketing material reflect your ideas, values and business. Using a graphic designer or branding expert is money well spent here as your brand is the foundation upon which everything else is built.

Having this established brand identity in place allows the web designer to incorporate it into the site. It can become part of the template upon which all the pages are built. If the brand accurately sums up your values, it can also provide a design cue for the overall site. Having to add a brand element after the fact is much harder and runs the risk of appearing dislocated from the site.

You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars creating brands. To begin with, you’re not going up against the big boys, you have to build up to that. Spending money on that brand consultant of graphic designer to create a logo is definitely worth every cent, but the rest you can do yourself. The designer can create your letterheads, business cards and other marketing material if you want, or you can do it yourself. Use the logo and create a professional email signature with links to your site and include it in all correspondence. Include a complement slip or business card in every written correspondence you send, and make sure it includes your web address, phone number and any other social contact details that are relevant. The more ways a potential client can contact you, the more business you’ll do.

By: Thought Mechanics Web Design

There is a balance to be struck in every web design between creativity and usability. It’s sometimes the case that our most innovative and exiting ideas never work in practice, and we have to compromise in order to give the client exactly what they want. A web design is the clients business, online brand or whatever, not our online portfolio, or somewhere to show off our skills. While there’s certainly an element of showing what we can do, it has to be strictly within the brief the client provides whether we like it or not.

It’s all very well designing the most beautiful sites around, but if the visitor can’t find what they’re looking for, or gets lost in the navigation then the site is a fail. That lesson, that you have to design to a brief and not for yourself, is the most difficult for many web designers to come to terms with. Ask any that have had to scrap what they viewed as a great idea because they wouldn’t work in the context, or didn’t meet the brief. Once you have come to terms with it, it’s plain sailing, offering a kind of freedom different from that of trying to exceed your own expectations. You have to go from thinking you’re an artist who works with websites to a web designer who works for clients. It’s easy for some people, but not for others.

Anyone who has designed websites for any length of time will also be familiar with the form and function conundrum. The site has to look beautiful, be attractive, target the right demographic and use design elements to highlight the purpose. It has to do all that while remaining easy to navigate, clear, clean and quick. Despite the crooning of our inner artist, the first rule of web design is usability. A user has to be able to get what they want in the fewest clicks possible and never get lost in the process. Menus have to be clean, clear and logical, the hierarchy has to fit the purpose and so on.

The balance between creativity and usability comes into play long before you flex your creative muscles. The client brief and their expectations must also be managed in order for them to get what they need and be happy with it. Any layman in any walk of life will have a certain idea of what’s possible and what isn’t.

That idea may not have any bearing on reality, which is where we come in. It’s our job to manage expectations and show the client what will work and what won’t. To forge a compromise between the site they dream of having, and the site the users will be happy with. In the end, we don’t design for us, or the client, we design websites for users. If they aren’t happy with how it looks or how it works, the both the designer and the client fail.

The very first thing you should do when hiring a web developer is to ask for a portfolio. Any experienced website creator – even a just graduating student – will be at the ready to share with you either a list of client sites or some presentation of created designs that he or she has built.

The next thing you need to do is examine these creations asking yourself these EXACT 5 questions:

[+] Does the overall site look very busy or too plain?

[+] Do the colors and images suit this particular site’s purpose?

[+] Is the navigation easy to understand as well as easy to use? Does it employ a well thought-out menu structure? If you cannot easily navigate the sites you are looking at, say thank you very much and look for another developer.

[+] Is each page of the website clearly defined? Can you click through several pages seen where each is clearly marked with a heading?

[+] Do all the sites have a unique look? When you look at several creations from the same developer, do they start to look identical, possibly just similar, because if so, say thank you and look for another developer.

Any search is going to find that the costs associated from one developer to another may vary quite considerably. You may find a college student, even a high school student, who is trying to build that all-important portfolio who can offer you a more-than-competent designed website at far below the going rate.

This is especially true if you’re seeking to have quite the basic website requiring nothing that is outlandishly customized or employs a lot of scripting for interactive components. Consider the fact that student web developers are so enthusiastic and constantly on top of their game that they may indeed be a great choice looking for something that is unique as well as functional at a very good price.

However, you may find that if you’re in need of specifically customized graphic designs and many server-side or database driven features, you may need to call upon an experienced developer who will obviously charge much more.

In any case, student or a veteran developer, it is highly recommended that you acquire several quotes, and make sure that these are always odd numbers so you’re not comparing one-to-one, but will likely compare one-to-one-to-one.

Since the goal of the majority of sites on the Internet is to conduct business, you’re going to want to find a web developer who has fundamental search engine optimization skills when designing a website. Search engine optimization, also known as SEO, is the procedure designing a website so it will rank as high as possible for certain targeted keywords on a search engine like Google.

You’re going to want any visitors looking for you to find you in several ways including using your company name, but you may also want them to find you looking for your particular type of company in your specific city. The ability to rank for certain keywords is a large part for your organic marketing success when people look for you on the Internet. If the developer you choose is not conversable with SEO tactics, the site you purchase will never attain high search engine ranking.

Like every business in the real world, those existing in cyberspace can profit from using business statistics that track certain trends in certain time periods. The same types of statistics are useful to gain an understanding of just how well your website is functioning as a commerce tool.

Therefore, make sure that your selected web developer understands use of a powerful tool like Google Analytics and directs you to sign up for an account where you can obtain a simple code that the developer can pace at the bottom of each one of your website pages.

If your developer does not mention this, make sure that you do. It should not be a deal this breaker, since you might buy artwork without the artist recommending a frame. However, it does concern the installation of code that does fall into the web developer’s realm of activity.

Another important aspect to consider when hiring a web developer is post-construction maintenance. The trend in recent years is to develop websites that include a content management system (CMS) where site owners and users have the ability to make simple updates like changing text and uploading and adding photos.
